‘As soon as I saw her’: Cyndi Lauper addresses Madonna ‘feud’


Cyndi Lauper has spoken out about the much-touted ‘feud’ with fellow 80s music icon Madonna, saying it was the product of those who liked to pit “women against each other.”

She added that she’s never personally had any issues with Madonna instead, is a fan of her work.

“As soon as I saw her do Like a PrayerI was like, ‘Oh my God. Ah, I love her!’ And I’ve loved her ever since,” Lauper, 71, told PEOPLE,

“In the ’80s, they started to pit women against each other,” she explained.

“Well, actually, it started in the ’60s, the pitting of women against each other and wanting them to go back to what they’d been doing before women’s lib (liberation) or whatever.”

Lauper and Madonna dominated the pop charts throughout the 80s, recording iconic songs and winning multiple Grammys and awards.

Both hit the big time in 1983, when women were turning towards artists proudly rejecting feminine norms in a fun and colorful way.

Lauper’s debut album She’s So Unusual was the first album by a female artist to achieve four top five hits on the Billboard Hot 100 – Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Time After Time, She Bop and All Through The Night,

Madonna was right beside her that same year, releasing Madonna which included the hit single Holiday.

It was in 1984 that Madonna’s star began to match Lauper’s with the release of Like a Virgin.

Lauper praised Madonna’s work, telling The Guardian: “As if you could only have one woman who is successful. What the hell is that about?”

“That woman has been entertaining us for years. She’s made great pop songs. I want to be competitive, but not pitted against another woman. I’m not into that.”

Lauper this week announced her Farewell tour which will arrive in Australia in 2025. She shared the news on social media.

“Hey #Australia I’m headed your way in 2025 with @theveronicas,” Lauper wrote in her post, much to the thrill of fans.
