One moment he was being swarmed by adoring fans, but a few days later, he was being taken into custody by police.

Indian movie star Allu Arjun has been escorted to jail by police after a stampede at a screening for his latest film, Pushpa 2: The Rulewith the resulting crowd crush leading to the death of a woman, with her son being seriously injured.

On December 4, a huge crowd gathered outside the Sandhya Theater in the South Indian state of Hyderabad in anticipation of the star’s appearance, though it was unscheduled.

The star, 41, was seen being driven in a car, peeking out from the sunroof of the vehicle, waving to the crowd for about 15 minutes.

The crowd, which was thought to be made up of hundreds of people, reportedly surged towards the star as they pushed to get closer.

The actor’s security team pushed the crowd back as a result, with police having to later pull people from the resulting crowd crush.

The woman – reported by local outlet India Today to be a 39-year-old named Revathi – died from asphyxiation, while her eight-year-old son was hospitalised.

Following the tragedy, the bereaved family filed a complaint against the star, his security team, and theater management.

According to India Todaythe actor was arrested on Friday morning (December 13) and sent to judicial custody. Though he was soon granted interim bail by the High Court, the South Indian star was not released that day, as the bail order reportedly did not reach the prison officials on time.
