“And I fell in love with Chris Penn. I learned that it’s great to have your heart broken.
“I hated it, it was miserable. But getting your heart broken is necessary. You know that you can love somebody and you have resilience.”
Robert Downey Jr
In 1984, Parker began dating actor Robert Downey Jr after they met on the set of the film Firstborn,
Like Parker, Downey Jr had been acting since he was a child.
Downey Jr and Parker reportedly moved in together just eight weeks after they first met, and shared a home in Hollywood with fellow actors Billy Zane and Kiefer Sutherland.
It was during their time together that Downey Jr’s infamous drug addiction began to take hold, although Parker told People she had no idea about his addiction “for a long time.”
“I was like, ‘Why is his heart beating so fast? Don’t do so many push-ups before bed!'” she recalled.
But as his addiction worsened, it put a strain on their relationship. They eventually broke up in 1991 after seven years together.
“I felt that if I left, he might die. I believed I was the person holding him together”
Parker told People the relationship taught her “how to take care of myself.”
“There was a huge amount of time spent making sure he was OK. At a certain point, I had the courage to say, ‘I’m going to walk away and I’m just going to pray that you don’t die, ‘” she said.
“I will say, I don’t regret any of it. I don’t resent the time spent.”
In a 2006 interview with The TimesParker even admitted she was once enabling Downey Jr. by staying with him.
“I felt that if I left, he might die. I believed I was the person holding him together. In every good and bad way I enabled him for a long time…”
Downey Jr. told Parade in 2008 his addictions caused the end of the relationship.
“I liked to drink, and I had a drug problem, and that didn’t jibe with Sarah Jessica, because it is the furthest thing from what she is,” he said.
“She provided me a home and understanding. She tried to help me. She was so miffed when I didn’t get my act together.”
John F. Kennedy Jr
Soon after the split, Parker started dating America’s “favorite son” and then eligible bachelor, John F Kennedy Jr.

He said Parker once surprised Kennedy at the airport after he arrived back in New York.

“I have been a semi-public person since (I was as a child), but I never had any idea what real fame was until I met John.
“He’s a nice man, but for God’s sake, I feel like I should apologize for dating him. It has become the defining factor in the person I am. It’s pathetic. When I die, they are going to say, ‘Oh, yeah ‘Sarah once dated John Kennedy.'”
Kennedy went on to meet Carolyn Besette in 1992 and the two wed in 1996. They died in a plane crash alongside her sister Lauren in 1999.
