Several major companies including Sony Music Publishing were also named.
The suit claimed Cyrus’ wildly popular 2023 track “duplicates numerous melodic, harmonic, and lyrical elements” of Mars’ 2013 song.
”It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man’,” the suit said.
When Cyrus released Flowers as a single on her 2023 album Endless Summer Vacations, the track drew some lyrical comparisons in the chorus to the ballad Mars.

“It used to be more, like, 1950s. The saddest song. Like: ‘Sure, I can be my own lover, but you’re so much better,'” Cyrus told the outlet.
