‘Public turned against me’: Why Kylie almost gave up her career


Aussie Kylie Minogue has thrilled fans by announcing her new tour – her first world tour in six years,

The hitmaker, who recently had incredible success with Padam Padamalso announced a new album, Tension-II.

It’s been an incredible few years for Minogue, 56, who recently won the Best Pop Dance Recording Grammy Award for Padam Padam.

TIME Magazine named her one of the world’s Most Influential People for 2024, with Minogue listed in the ‘Icons’ category.

But it hasn’t been an easy ride to the top for the singer, who had humble beginnings in Melbourne before moving to the UK – where she had huge success.

In the ’80s, Minogue soon landed a starring role as fan-favorite mechanic Charlene Robinson on the iconic soap Neighbours and soon branched out to launch her singing career.

But in the early days, there were some critics and naysayers, who often (and unfairly) labeled Minogue “the Singing Budgie,” despite her producing chart-topping hits like The Locomotion and especially for you and wins some awards.

It was Minogue’s image and pop hits that helped her earn the title.

In a resurfaced interview with 60 Minutes, Minogue said she once worried about her career and the longevity of it.

“I was on everything, I was sick of seeing myself, so I thought, ‘The poor public, how are they going to cope? It’s overkill’,” she said.

“And that’s when the public turned against me but because I was contracted, I couldn’t stop and had to keep going.”

“I felt like I didn’t want to do this, I thought, ‘What am I doing here? I’d rather have a little shop, what I always dreamed of doing, a little holiday house, getting married and having kids. ‘Why can’t I just do that?’ There was so much pressure from so many people.”

Speaking about the saying, “I have everything, but I have nothing,” Minogue admitted on 60 Minutes: “It’s true what they say about that.”

“I’ve always held onto this thought that it might end,” she candidly added.

But the star pushed through and kept going, and now has 17 studio albums under her belt.

She soon earned herself the title “the princess of pop” – and sold a whopping 80 million records worldwide and is the highest selling Australian-born solo artist of all time, according to the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.

Some of her biggest hits include 2001’s Can’t Get You Out of My Head, Come Into My World, and Spinning Around.

Minogue, who has had a number of high-profile romances over the years, is also a businesswoman and has her own perfume and wine brand under her belt.

She has reportedly sold a whopping 15 million bottles worldwide so far.

Minogue, who recently kicked off a Las Vegas residency and is a breast cancer survivor, recently told US Weekly about how proud she is for “getting past every person that tried to write me off,” in her career.
