Drew Barrymore has opened up about “shame” she has felt about her past struggles with substance use, and how a new film has helped her forgive herself.
the actor sat down with Zoe Kravitz for an interview on her talk show, discussing Kravitz’s new directorial debut Blink Twice,
Barrymore revealed watching the film “affected (her) personally” and took her back to a time when she struggled with substances.

“There’s a lot of substances in the film,” Barrymore said.
The Charlie’s Angels The star said she learned a “big part of” her “trauma” that came down to the fact that she “used to be a blackout drinker”.
“So watching this film was an extraordinary journey for me to forgive myself for that,” she explained.
“Because I put myself in situations I shouldn’t have put myself in and I felt so much shame about that.”

Holding Kravitz’s hands as she spoke in earnest, Barrymore shared an update on her sobriety journey.
“I haven’t had a drink in five years,” she announced as the audience burst into applause.
“Congratulations,” Kravitz responded.
Barrymore said Kravitz’s film “is not only … about the things that can happen to us, but it made (her) think about the things we’ve done to ourselves”.

The former child star’s journey with sobriety comes after she had struggled with addiction early in life.
The actor has been open about her substance use issues that began when she was just a child and saw her hospitalized for addiction treatment at just 13 and emancipated from her parents at 14.
Earlier this year, Barrymore spoke to People about her sobriety and how it’s her way of honoring her family’s name and breaking generational patterns.

“I think, for me, stopping drinking is one of the most honoring things I can do to the Barrymore name because we have all been such hedonists,” she said.
“Don’t look to me as the pillar of health and wellness and having it all together,” she added.
“It’s just like, you know what? This didn’t work for our family, and I’m going to stop it. I’m going to be the one to break the link in that chain and maybe my kids and their kids will be better off for it.”
